The Fat Albert
I was commissioned by one of my good customers and friend to build him an amp to try to capture one of his favorite all time tones, the Page tone from the Royal Albert Hall recordings from 1970. He has been wanting that tone for 30 years, and I truly feel its been deliverd. After months of research, and getting help from another friend of mine, Mark Huss, who is one of the most knowledgeable Hiwatt affecionados in the country, I was finally able to get it together. WOW. Thats all I can say. This is an amazing amp. It is switchable (more on that later) from a lower gain setting, to a hot Marshally type gain level, but with that Hiwatt tone. Tonally the amp is a pretty true recreation. I did however decide to upgrade a few things during the build process. The original version had a terrible switching setup. I have redone that, so its noise and interference free, and also is much quieter switching. The footswitch is included as standard. Also, the original ran the screens WAYYYYY to hot, causing damage to even hearty NOS tubes, with the new production tubes having no chance for survival.
The Fat Albert uses
3 12ax7 preamp tubes, 4 Winged C el34 power tubes 100 watt/ 2 el34 50 watt, Solid state rectification.
